First Contact 50th Pre-Anniversary

Today is a historic day. Er… well, it will be a historic day. Fifty years from now, on April 5th 2063, Zefram Cochrane will make the first warp flight from Earth, ushering us into a new age.

If you don't know what I'm talking about, a Star Trek fan will be happy to explain it all – but here’s the synopsis: Dr. Cochrane, riding on his converted ICBM, helping to move humanity out of its “infancy” and into the larger community of the universe. Warp flight is considered a civilization’s “coming of age” moment, and that moment is 50 years from today. Ironically, it is done on an old ICBM. It is interesting that as we beat our swords into ploughshares, we usually just end up with bigger swords. But I digress…

As you are celebrating (and I assume that you are), take time to reflect, and look forward to the next 50 years. Happy First Contact 50th Pre-Anniversary Day!

Don't try to be a great man, just be a man. And let history make its own judgments. Dr. Zefram Cochrane
